I’ll be talking about jBPM at the Atlanta JBUG on February 29th at 6:30pm at the Shadow-Soft HQ. The talk is going to be close to 2 hours so we will have plenty of time to go through slides but more importantly demos and of course Q&A. jBPM Web Designer 2.0 released

Designer version 2.0 has been released alongside jBPM 5.2. This is a major release and includes some really cool new features:

Integration with the domain-specific service repository
Visual Process Validation: new features allows users to visually validate their processes at edit time
Ability to view the process in ERDF, JSON, PDF, PNG, BPMN2, and SVG formats
New Process Information section: contains information about the process, such as name, creation date, version, etc
jBPM 3.2 Process Migration: new feature allows users to migrate existing jBPM 3.2-based processes to BPMN2
Ability to import existing bpmn2 processes straight into designer
Ability to create “sharable” process image, PDF, and ability to generate code for embedding designer in custom applications
Support four boundary events
Visual support for Text Annotations, Groups, and Lanes
Support for sub-processes
Update to latest Guvnor

I’m very excited that we released jBPM 5.2. The list of new features is quite impressive! It feels great to be part of such an awesome open-source project and an even better team.

In this video we presents a number of new features added to the jBPM5 Web Designer. These include:

1. Integration with the jbpmmigration project. Allows users to migrate their existing jPDL 3.2 based processes to BPMN2.
2. Ability to view process sources in a number of different formats (BPMN2, JSON, PNG, PDF, ERDF, and SVG)
3. Default installation of jBPM Service Nodes on process creation
4. Integration with the jBPM5 service repository.
5. Visual process validation

These features will be available in the next Web Designer release, however if you would like to start playing with them, you can download a snapshot version here: people.redhat.com/tsurdilo/oryx/latest/

New jBPM5 web designer version available

A new jBPM5 web designer version 1.0.0.055 is available for download now on sourceforge. It includes over 20 bug fixes from the previous version.

If you are using the jBPM installer, follow these steps to upgrade to this new version:

1) Edit $jbpm-installer-dir$/build.properties and make sure you have:

# the version of the Designer you want to use
# and the associated URL you want to get it from
designer.version=1.0.0.055-jboss
designer.url=http://sourceforge.net/projects/jbpm/files/designer/designer-1.0.0.055/

2) In $jbpm-installer-dir$ execute the following commands:
ant clean.demo
ant install.demo
ant start.demo

jBPM5 tooling support for service nodes

Per request of our jBPM community here is a video that shows how to configure service nodes (work items) in both the jBPM5 Eclipse, and the web-based editors.

In the video we use tooling installed via the jBPM 5.1.0.Final installer that is available for download on sourceforge.

Develop complex jBPM processes all in Guvnor? Yes, you can!

The above video showcasts some of the new jBPM web-based tooling support added to Drools Guvnor and the Oryx Designer used by jBPM to allow both business users and developers to create complex BPMN2.0 processes without depending on the traditional development environments.

The new tooling support includes:
* jBPM Custom-workitem definition editor in Guvnor.
* Oryx Designer ability to store processes to PNG and PDF formats.
* Ability to view the BPMN2.0 source of the process in Guvnor.
* Oryx Designer ability to generate process task forms which are fully-executable in jBPM Console. Templates also include form validation support out-of-the-box.
* Tight integration between Oryx Designer and Drools Guvnor.

In this video we create a simple medicine checkout procedure process which used both human tasks and a custom email notification workitem all in Guvnor, then execute it inside jBPM Console.

Using jBPM domain-specific service nodes in Oryx designer

jBPM allows users to extend the default process constructs with domain-specific extensions. These extensions, also called domain-specific service nodes, simplify development in a particular application domain in that they are:

1) domain-specific
2) declarative (what, not how)
3) high-level (no code)
4) customizable to the context

So far incorporating domain-specific service nodes was only possible within the Drools Flow Eclipse Plugin. (For more info check out the jBPM docs as well as this great video).
We have now added support for domain-specific service nodes to the Oryx web designer. This allows users to create fully executable BPMN2 processes including domain-specific service nodes, all inside Guvnor.

This video shows how you can use can create new or use your existing domain-specific service nodes inside the Oryx designer (quicktime movie available here). You can also start playing with this by downloading the designer from here as well as Guvnor 5.2.0.CR1.

Integrate Oryx Designer and Guvnor in your own applications

Shortly after we started blogging about the Guvnor integration with Oryx Designer for jBPM5, we received a number of inquiries on how to use it in custom applications and be able to create/edit jBPM5 processes outside of Guvnor while at the same time leverage Guvnor as the central JCR repository for all your jBPM5 assets.

This video shows a custom Seam2/RichFaces application which utilizes the Guvnor Standalone Editor feature and the recently added AtomPub Interface to fully integrate Oryx Designer and Guvnor to create/edit jBPM5 processes without having to do any work in the Guvnor UI.

Using drools-ant to migrate/back-up existing Jackrabbit repositories

After using Guvnor for a while you may want to create a back-up of your existing JCR repository or migrate to one stored in an external database. Often this becomes a daunting task, especially if you already have a large number of existing resources in Guvnor.

Drools-ant to the rescue!

This video shows an example on how to use a new drools-ant task to migrate from the default file-based Guvnor repository to one stored in MySQL. Same task can also be used to create back-ups of your existing repository.
